Activities and Duties of Database Administrator

What is the job profile of a Database Administrator? What are the activities and duties of a Database Administrator?

We all know that most of the industries are using them to maintain their large databases nowadays. Maintaining a database involves lot of work on managing, organizing, storing and retrieving the stored data. Database Administrator identifies the needs of the user, designs, implement and maintains the database. Database is designed in such a way that multiple users can access the same data without any inconsistency.

Database Administrators are also responsible for the security of database and plans security measures by implementing backup, data integrity and security in the database. They also work on recovery measures in case the database is corrupted or lost. Similarly, troubleshooting is also the duty of a Database Administrator.

Various activities and duties of Database Administrator include:

    • Provides faster query execution by managing parameters and monitoring performance of the database. In a client-server type setup it is very important that all the data is available online quickly otherwise there would be no use of employing computerized database.
    • They consider both front end and back end data organization accessibility for its end users
    • Designing a data model by mapping the logical design in its early stages. Database Administrator directly deals with the DBMS and knows potential problems that generally arise. Only a Database Administrator can guide the designing team about the performance requirement.
    • Database Administrator also organizes the hardware and software requirements
    • Testing new database management system versions to find a better solution for existing queries
    • Writing data dictionary definitions, procedures and various other documentation for database
    • Controls privileges and permissions to users of database. A Database Administrator manages adding or removing users from accessing the database.
    • Database Administrator is responsible for data analysis and provides faster query execution or performance by new indexing and data retrieval or storage methods.
    • Finding new applications that benefit more than the existing software
    • Maintaining data format and standard
    • Database Administrator not only finds new software that overcomes the drawbacks of existing software but also is also responsible for installation of new software related to DBMS performance.
    • Database Administrator also tests the new software with staff members before it is completely implemented in an organization.
    • Recoverability is one of the most important and vital duty of a Database Administrator. Any type of error such as, data entry error, hardware failure, software failure, bugs, virus etc. can result in corrupting database. It is the duty of the Database Administrator to recover such lost data and avoid any such problems. Various recovery plans are designed by Database Administrators in advance. Usually Database Administrators backup the database at certain fixed timestamps to ensure security of a database.

Database Administrators find new ways to set up databases that are convenient for the user, have no redundancy and is faster in execution or performance. However, the duties and activities of a Database Administrator differ with the capability of a database.
