Oracle Discoverer is an Oracle product that helps to do web publishing, data analysis, and ad-hoc querying and reporting using a tool set. It is very beneficial for end users or business where you need easy access to data avoiding complexities of database. By use of wizards and menus, your most of the hard work is done by the Oracle Discoverer. You can make better and well-informed decisions with Oracle Discoverer.

I am going to explain the basics of connecting with and using oracle discoverer for ad hoc reporting purposes.

    Connecting to Oracle Discoverer:

If you are starting Oracle Discoverer for the first time then you need to set up one-time set up process. You only have to follow the instructions that appear on the screen to initialize Oracle Discoverer.

Goto the web URL of Discoverer. To login Oracle Discoverer you need to have a user id and password. If you do not have a public connection created by your Database Manager, then you can create your own private or user defined connection. If you are using existing login information then there is no need to define the particulars of a connection as all the information is stored in the database.

You can edit or delete your Oracle Discoverer connection as per your requirements by just clicking on the Update button in front of the connection name you want to edit or by choosing Delete button to delete the connection. Update button is also useful if you want to change your settings or password for a connection.

    Features of Discoverer

Oracle Discoverer shows the data from the database in the form of Workbook and Worksheets. You can analyze data and share it using Worksheets. With Oracle Discoverer, you always get the dynamic or real time information every time you open your workbook as it retrieves the data from the database using the defined query.

You may either create new workbooks to access data or use the existing workbooks that have been created in the past. You can even schedule your Oracle Discoverer to update and store workbooks in database for future reference or for sharing it with other users in organization. It is also possible to generate reports in HTML or Microsoft Excel formats if you want to share information with people who do not have Oracle Discoverer.

You can also connect to databases other than Oracle using Oracle Discoverer through ODBC. With desktop reporting features of Oracle Discoverer, you can easily analyze financial information and even generate financial reports quickly. There are three main Editions of Oracle Discoverer, namely, User Edition, Administration Edition and End User Layer or EUL.

Using Oracle Discoverer is easier with its help system. You can easily click on the help or help topics and look for your help topic easily. It is also possible to view index entries by clicking on the Index icon on top of help page. To exit from the Oracle Discoverer simply go to the File menu option and click on the Exit option.
