Oracle Designer is a CASE tool and is similar to Oracle Forms Developer in various aspects. It uses different tools for designing various enterprise and professional applications.

Oracle Designer is not only useful for designing databases using entity-relationship diagrams but you can also work with it throughout the software development lifecycle. You can do variety of tasks with your Oracle Designer such as software design, system analysis, business process modeling and system generation. Oracle Designer supports business process, entity-relationship, dataflow, server model, module or application and function hierarchy diagrams. Various components of Oracle Designer include business process modeling, system analysis modeling, design wizards, systems design, client/server generators and utilities.

It is also very easy to prepare forms, graphics, web server applications, server applications, reports, visual basic etc. with client/server generators of Oracle Designer. Various utilities have also been added to Oracle Designer such as admin utility, SQL, RON or Repository Object Navigator, Repository Reports and Matrix. Various types of graphical editors are available that can be used to draw types of diagrams but it is better to use graphical editor that is compatible with ER constructs so that it results in well-formed ER-diagrams.

Also all the information for an entity of an ER-diagram is stored in the database and is not visible otherwise. If you want to seek that information then all you have to do is to click on that entity in the ER-diagram.

The current version of Oracle Designer is 10g Release 2.

    Hope this helped.
