When cloning cross platform from UFS to ASM or vice versa .. can you change the DB name at the same time?

Yes -- you can do it the old fashioned way by creating a new controlfile or you can use the supplied dbnewid utility.

btw. quick follow up question. Any way of doing it from an RMAN backupset? Directly changing the name as I create the new clone without creating an instance with the same name first?
    Thanks.

Looks like you have to restore the control from the backupset to an instance with (temporarily) the same name as the original before renaming these ctl files and then restoring datafile & archive logs to the new locations. Afterwards use 'nid' to rename the DB.
